Karen Gillmore is the owner of Pioneer Designs. She started the business at home because she has years of experience in sewing. A Graduate of LDS Business College, she worked for many years in the Banking Industry. She has reached a time in her life where she wants be at home with her young daughter and husband, Earl, who is awaiting a major organ transplant.
Karen and Earl both have experience in various aspects of the garment and design industries and their combined talents have made for a very strong team. Karen has always had an interest in the Utah Pioneers, as she is a descendant. In 1997 she became interested in applying her lifelong skills in sewing to making pioneer clothes for use in reenactment activities of today. Earl immigrated to Salt Lake pulling a Handcart on the Mormon Trail in 1997 as handcart leader in the 11th Handcart Company to Zion, Mormon Trail Wagon Train, 150 yrs, inc. He has traveled the entire Mormon Trail including Iowa. 2 months & 1 week on the U S Designated Mormon Trail in Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah, One month and 5 days on the undesignated Mormon Trails in Iowa and Nebraska.
Pioneer Designs is located on the east edge of Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah at the real end of the Mormon Trail. Their home was built by 1847 pioneers, the Isaac Laney Family and is also the location of their business.
